Remote Desktop Web Connection

Remote Desktop via the web requires Internet Explorer, Windows, and permission for some ActiveX controls to download to your computer.

This is a great way to access applications and files on the server when you are away from your normal computers, such as using a public computer lab.

ISU Computer Labs available for all students
(any of the labs with Windows machines should work, if you find one that does not, please let us know.)

Allowing ActiveX

If the Remote Desktop web connection is not working, you may need to change your Internet Explorer security settings. On XP sp2, look for a yellow bar to appear near the top of your browser's window and tell it to allow the ActiveX installation.

Otherwise, if able, set the following items from within Internet Explorer:

  1. Menu: Tools -> Internet Options
  2. Tab: Security
  3. Button: Custom Level...
  4. Set any option mentioning ActiveX to at least 'Prompt' if not 'Enable'.

Use your ISU net-ID

Server access is now linked to your ISU net-ID (same as your ISU email).

Hands on

In labs and outside of class, you can learn how modern software can help you solve environmental science problems.

Protect your work, Log off

Remote Desktop allows you to disconnect without closing your programs. Logging off insures that your files are safely closed and saved.
